WINTER LAWN PREP
During October and November, grass stores nutrients to prepare for winter. Fertilizing at this time is crucial. How often should I water my lawn?
For an established lawn, about one inch of water per week is a good general starting point, although soil, slope, weather, and competition from trees can affect how much your lawn needs. Watering deeply and less frequently encourages deeper roots and better drought tolerance.
Newly seeded lawns are different: the seed needs to stay consistently moist during germination and may require light watering several times a day at first.
How high should I mow my lawn during summer?
During hot summer weather, mow fescue at a higher setting, around 4" tall. Taller grass helps shade the soil, protect roots from intense heat, conserve moisture, and make it harder for weeds to establish. Avoid removing too much of the grass blade at one time.
When is the best time to seed a lawn in Kansas City?
Early fall is generally the best time to seed or overseed cool-season lawns in the Kansas City area. Cooler temperatures and warm soil create favorable conditions for germination and root development while giving new grass time to establish before winter.
What type of grass seed is best for Kansas City lawns?
Turf-type tall fescue is one of the most popular choices for Kansas City lawns because its deep root system helps it tolerate heat, drought, and foot traffic.
Bluegrass offers a finer blade and dense growth habit, with the ability to spread and help fill damaged areas, while a fescue-bluegrass mix combines the durability of fescue with the spreading characteristics of bluegrass.
You may also see zoysia lawns throughout Kansas City; as a warm-season grass, however, zoysia follows a very different growing and maintenance schedule than cool-season grasses like fescue and bluegrass.
Can I use weed killer before overseeding my lawn?
Yes, but timing matters. Many herbicides can interfere with the germination of new grass seed, so existing weeds should be treated at least 3 weeks before you plan to seed. Always follow the product label for the specific herbicide you are using, and avoid applying pre-emergent weed control when preparing an area for new grass seed.
What’s the difference between a grass seed mix and a grass seed blend?
A blend combines multiple varieties of the same grass species, while a mix combines two or more different grass species. For example, a fescue blend may include several varieties of turf-type tall fescue selected to complement one another, while a fescue-bluegrass mix combines the different strengths of both species. Your Grass Guide uses this terminology consistently with products such as Fescue Blend, Bluegrass Blend, and Fescue Blue Mix.

What is causing brown or dead patches in my lawn?
Several lawn problems can create similar-looking damage. Grub damage often produces dead areas that can pull away from the soil almost like carpet because the roots have been eaten. Fescue can develop brown patch disease, while bluegrass may be affected by dollar spot and other fungal problems.
